Future-proofing St Leonard’s for future generations!
The ancient Grade 1 listed parish church of St Leonard’s has stood at the heart of Flamstead village for almost 900 years. It serves not only as a place of worship, but also as a valuable community hub for the village.
In 2018, this very special building was under threat due to urgent roof repairs which unless carried out would have resulted in the building having to be closed to the public. The church contains rare medieval wall paintings dating from the 13th century which needed to be preserved, but this would not be possible until the building was made water-tight and damp eliminated.
In 2018, the proceeds from the Flamstead Scarecrow Festival went towards the Roof Appeal, and along with major local fundraising and significant funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we were able to save our beautiful 12th century village church from closure. Damp and deathwatch beetle had destroyed the roof timbers, but following extensive refurbishment throughout 2020 and 2021, the church reopened in December 2021.
In 2022 the Flamstead Scarecrow Festival continued to support the Friends of St Leonard’s as well as supporting many other local causes.
